Walibi Halloween Fright Nights is the biggest Halloween show in Europe. For twelve days the visitors of the theme park Walibi were electrified and terrified of all the horrors awaiting them. Actors, haunted houses, scare zones and of course Eddie’s Area.

The ruler of freaks, the master of scum, the horror clown of Walibi Holland Eddie the Clown was looking to expand his Legion of Freaks. At the Fright Nights of 2018 we orchestrated a public roast. On the custom stage, three unlucky challengers competed with Eddie to prove themselves freak-worthy. Only the toughest and most vicious one would be added to the Legion, the rest was toast.

For this assignment we got complete creative freedom, with only one requirement: there will be a roast. No crispy human flesh, but a flood of insults. It became a humorous and thrilling theater show with deadly twists and turns. This show moment was executed four times each evening for twelve nights.

Symbolics of creation

Eddie the Clown is a world famous Halloween creature, especially in the world of theme parks.

With hordes of fans knowing the inns and outs of this character, it was extremely important to understand the delicacies when it came to truly being ‘on brand’.

Entering the stage by smashing a wall apart with a wrecking ball, Eddie used multiple torture instruments filled with Special Effects and theatre techniques to surprise and entertain the audience.

The stage design facilitated not only the wrecking ball, but also a motion system to lift a cage. Where one of his victims was lowered into a barrel of acid. He would then be taken out as a melted and damaged ‘near-death-creature’ whilst the drums of Eddie’s helpers accompanied the screams.

The show was performed a staggering 64 times throughout the month October.

Touch of horror

Combining humor with horror and stand-up with showmaking.

One of the torture instruments was a tanning bed that would catch fire with our unlucky audience member (actor) trapped inside. A prop that combined lights and pyrotechnics. To provide safety our team carried out inspections multiple times a day. A remarkable torture machine that did its work of helping Eddie clear out his contestants.
